ABOUT Picnic with the Pops
One of Lexington’s favorite summer traditions, Picnic with the Pops is an annual outdoor musical event held in August at the Meadow at Keene Barn at Keeneland. Featuring a fun and light-hearted atmosphere with picnic dinners, a table decorating contest, and an idyllic Kentucky setting, the event started in 1980 by a group that included Lexington’s mayor at the time, Jim Amato, and Thomas Minter, who served as the chairman of the event until 2012. The event features live orchestra music by the Lexington Philharmonic and a special guest artist each year.
This year’s Pops features the exciting, critically-acclaimed Michael Cavanaugh in Concert: The Songs of Elton John and More! Michael Cavanaugh: Named “Corporate Entertainer of the Year” in 2013 by Reuters, Cavanaugh is a charismatic performer also known for his starring role in the Grammy- and Tony-nominated Broadway production of “Movin’ Out” (featuring the music of Billy Joel). His high energy symphony orchestra performances invoke the spirit of classic singer / songwriters with live, full symphony orchestra accompaniment.
Michael Cavanaugh: The Songs of Elton John and More is the second in Cavanaugh’s “Generations of Rock” symphony series. The dynamic set list for this show will feature creative reinterpretations of classic Elton John hits, interspersed with additional songs by rock & roll legends Wings, Styx, The Eagles and more.
